Poster Deadline: September 23, 2005

Late Breaking Paper Deadline: September 16, 2005
The 4th International Symposium on
Empirical Software Engineering
Noosa Heads, Queensland, AUSTRALIA, November 17-18, 2005

Continuing the success of previous ISESE conferences, we are arranging the 4th International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering conference at Noosa Heads, Queensland, AUSTRALIA during November 17-18, 2005. ISESE has continuously attracted participants equally from industry, research, and academia confirming that the conference provides topics, which are up-to-date, important, and interesting.

Theme & Scope

The objective of the International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering (ISESE) is to provide a forum where researchers and practitioners can report on and discuss new research results in the area of empirical software engineering.

The symposium encourages the exchange of ideas to understand, from an empirical viewpoint, the strengths and weaknesses of software engineering technologies. The symposium focuses on the processes, design and structure of empirical studies as well as the results of specific studies. These studies may vary from controlled experiments to field studies, from quantitative to qualitative studies.

Topics

The main topics of the conference include:

  • Empirical studies of software processes and products
  • Evaluation and comparison of techniques and models (cost estimation, analysis and design methods, testing)
  • Reports on benefits derived from using certain technologies
  • Development of predictive models
  • Experiences with research methods: measurement theory, experimental design, qualitative modelling, analysis approaches, grounded theory, protocol studies, families of experiments
  • Development, derivation and/or comparison of organizational models of software development
  • Industrial experience in process improvement
  • Quality measurement
  • Process modelling and applications in industry
  • Experience management
  • Systematic Reviews and Evidence Based Software Engineering

Research Paper Submissions
Submit full papers to june.verner@nicta.com.au.  Full papers are due May 20, 2005 and will be published in the conference proceedings. Details regarding posters will be available later.  Selected high-quality papers will be invited to submit an expanded version for a special issue of the Journal of Empirical Software Engineering (http://www.sce.carleton.ca/squall/emse).

Include contact information for submitting author (name, email, address). The attachment should be in PDF format.

Acceptance Decisions By: August 1, 2005

Final Camera-ready Copy Due: September 2, 2005

Papers describing unpublished, original work are solicited on any software engineering topic as long as there is an empirical component to the work being presented. Such contribution can take the form of a case/field study, controlled experiment, survey, meta-analysis of previous studies, or critical review of previous empirical work (e.g., form a methodological standpoint). Papers should be written in English, double-spaced, and be no longer than 20 pages, using at least an 11 point font. Authors are requested to submit an electronic version of their paper (PDF format). The paper should have a cover page, which includes a 200-word abstract, a list of keywords, and the author's telephone number and e-mail address. Accepted papers, in the final form, will have to fit within 10 pages, IEEE double column format (please follow IEEE CS Press Proceedings Author Guidelines at http://www.computer.org/cspress/instruct.htm).

Poster Submissions

We invite posters of current research that explores areas of empirical software engineering.  Posters should be about work in progress, typically where there are no or only initial results. Posters can describe any software engineering theme so long as there is an empirical description of how the work will/has been done and what validation is planned.

All submissions will be reviewed by the poster chair and committee for appropriateness to the themes of the conference.  Posters will be on view for the duration of the ISESE conference.

Important dates:

Submission: 23rd September 2005
Notification: 7th October 2005

Please submit a PDF version of the poster to karl.cox@nicta.com.au.  If you wish to submit 6 A4 (American Letterhead) parts of the poster for review, we can assemble the parts here. Alternatively, send a PDF of the full size document.

Late Breaking Paper Submissions

We invite submissions on works in progress and/or recent results on themes appropriate to empirical software engineering. Late breaking papers are extended abstracts of current research or work that is not mature enough yet to provide concrete results. We are particularly interested in papers that have an industrial component.

Papers should be no more than 4 sides in length, formatted as per the main conference papers, IEEE 2 column.

All papers will be peer reviewed by the Late Breaking Papers review committee (TBD). Though accepted papers will not be published in the ISESE main conference proceedings, they will be published with an ISBN and will be available after the conference to the public for a fee. Copyright will remain with the authors.

Submit Late Breaking Position Papers to karl.cox@nicta.com.au.

Important dates:

Submission: 16th September 2005
